How To Use CutSmart To Prolong The Life Of Your Mag Drill & Cutters

At Rotabroach, all of our Element magnetic drills incorporate CutSmart into their design. Ensuring safe drill usage and prolonging their lifespan, this technology provides a traffic light system to indicate the correct amount of pressure, helping users ease off if required and stay on track. But what exactly is CutSmart and how can you ensure you’re using it effectively? This guide will answer those questions and more.

What Is CutSmart & How Does It Make My Mag Drill & Cutters Last Longer?

All of our Element magnetic drills are kitted out with dual motor protection systems that ensure safety and an extended lifespan of your magnetic drill. Our Rotabroach CutSmart system – which can be found on the control panel – provides a visual indication of torque being applied to the drill’s motor. Should you apply more pressure to the material than the recommended level for more than 2 seconds, the machine will automatically cut out, protecting both the user, the magnetic drill and the material. No time is wasted however, as to restart the power tool, all you need to do is press the start button again. This ensures you can restart operations quickly, safely and effectively, saving time, money and allowing you to stick to project deadlines.

To utilise CutSmart effectively, please follow these safety instructions:

1.  When the drill is connected to the power supply, the red LED will show power to the magnetic drill.

2.  To turn the magnet on or off, press the large button on the control panel. A green LED will let you know when the magnet is on. Depending on the material’s thickness and magnetic adhesion, the green magnet LED also indicates that optimum adhesion has been achieved, and drilling operation is good to go. If the red magnet LED shows, this suggests that optimum adhesion has not been achieved, although drilling operation is still available.

3. When the magnet has power, the green switch will light up, showing you the motor can be started. Use the speed controller on the top cap housing to determine the speed, ensuring that you always use recommended speeds for the required drill size.

4. Press the green switch to turn the drill motor on and start cutting, ensuring you have followed all designated safety precautions before doing so. You can then drill the hole to the desired size applying the optimal amount of pressure safe in the knowledge that you are not unnecessarily over working the motor or blunting your cutters.

5. To ensure you are cutting safety, keep an eye on the CutSmart panel, which will indicate whether you are drilling with too much force. For reference, the panel with either show:

6. Once drilling is complete, and you’re happy with your work, turn the motor off by pressing the red switch. The motor will stop and the magnet will remain on. The green switch will then illuminate.

If you’re thinking what makes CutSmart different from other tool safety features, then we’ll tell you next. Most other mag drills only calculate thermal overload. CutSmart inspects current first, as this is where the greatest safety risks occur. The current is also an earlier indicator that you are placing strain on the cutter and mag drill motor. Although thermal overload is good for temperature protection, the tool will only stop if the motor becomes too warm, and will only allow a restart after the motor has cooled down to a safer level, which can take at least a couple of minutes – if not longer. With CutSmart however, a restart can happen straight away, as it’s focusing on current rather than temperature. This proven safety feature ensures minimal disruption, prolonged tool safety and the knowledge you’re getting the very best for your projects. In fact, our Element mag drill customers come from industries as varied as steel fabrication, bridge building and agriculture, as well as renewable energy, construction and ship building, who regularly comment on CutSmart’s efficiency. If you’d like to try out CutSmart for yourself – before committing to a mag drill purchase – you can also rent out our power tools, including the Element 40 and Element 50, from a tool hire shop – giving you first-hand experience.
